The blockbuster film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets drew large crowds of cinemagoers on its release today in France. More and more films are being set in space, a sign of the public’s increasing interest in this field.

Ahead of the 52nd International Paris Air Show that will be opening its doors Monday 19 June at Le Bourget, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall gave a conference for the national and international press today. He took the opportunity to address French space policy issues and present the new features that CNES will be showcasing at Le Bourget, revolving around the agency’s signature theme of “Inventing the Future of Space”, in a futuristic pavilion where digital technologies will be centre stage.

To kick off the public days at the Paris Air Show on Friday 23 June, CNES and French motion picture company EuropaCorp held a masterclass entitled “Valerian: space guest”. This one-of-a-kind event was a chance to meet cartoonist Mézières, author of the Valerian sci-fi comic series, first published in Pilote magazine in 1967, and concept artist Sylvain Despretz.
