  1. France-Australia space cooperation- CNES and CSIRO sign agreement on PILOT balloon mission

    Thursday 21 July in Sydney, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and CSIRO Chief Executive Larry Marshall signed a cooperation agreement concerning the PILOT mission set to launch from Alice Springs in March-April 2017. PILOT intends to map the direction and intensity of the Milky Way’s magnetic field and to gain new insights into the magnetic properties of interstellar dust grains.

  3. CNES’s PILOT telescope completes first successful balloon flight over Canada

    Monday 21 September, CNES’s PILOT project accomplished its mission in the skies above Timmins in Canada. Its payload was able to measure submillimetre polarized emission from the dust that fills our galaxy, the Milky Way, in order to map its magnetic field and study its role in the cycle of matter.

    With the aim of studying the microwave background radiation (traces of the intense heat in the Universe approximately 380,000 years after the Big Bang), the PILOT astrophysics gondola flew on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 21pm local time from Timmins, Canada. Under a 800,000 m3 balloon, the PILOT experiment collected scientific data for about 24 hours.
