    Mars is known for its thin atmosphere, where CO2 dominates and provides most of the atmospheric mass and pressure. In fact, the pressure is similar to that in the Earth’s stratosphere, which is a layer of the atmosphere, at more than 30km above the surface.

    Wednesday 19 July, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall visited the ESA and GIFAS stands at the MAKS international air show in Moscow, where he also met his counterpart Igor Komarov, Head of Roscosmos, the Russian federal space agency. The two agency heads took the opportunity to review joint work undertaken in 2016, a year marked by the 50th anniversary of French-Russian space cooperation, as well as prospects for closer cooperation driven by the new political dynamic between France and Russia.

    De nouveaux tests ont eu lieu, en Suède, sur le plus grand parachute de descente d’ExoMars le 05/08/2019, à haute altitude. La toile n’a malheureusement pas résisté… Les ingénieurs vont devoir trouver des solutions. Le lancement vers Mars reste programmé à l’été prochain.

  12. ExoMars 2016: TGO enters Martian orbit

    The ExoMars 2016 mission’s Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was successfully captured into Martian orbit Wednesday 19 October. However, the landing of Schiaparelli had still not been confirmed at the end of our video broadcast of the event. The mission’s engineers were set to spend the night poring over data acquired by various satellites orbiting Mars to track down the tiny lander.

    On 19 October, the landing demonstrator known as ExoMars Schiaparelli will touch down on Mars after detaching itself from the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). Its job is to validate new technologies and to demonstrate Europe’s ability to land on Mars, as well as to take scientific measurements. The orbiter’s trajectory has just been adjusted to ensure the success of the two events scheduled for 19 October—the landing of Schiaparelli in the Meridiani Planum region, and TGO’s insertion into orbit.

Dans le cadre d’une campagne d’observations optiques, des images de passage du lanceur et de son passager ont pu être captées par plusieurs centres d’observation en Italie, Nouvelle-Zélande et jusqu’en Australie.

  19. ExoMars 2016 en route to Mars

    Following its launch and initial orbital manoeuvres, the ExoMars 2016 mission is on its way to Mars, where it will seek and identify atmospheric components indicating recent geological or biological activity on the Red Planet. Once in Mars orbit, the mission’s satellite will study the planet’s atmosphere and evolution, while also providing a platform to relay telecommunications to Earth for later surface operations. This satellite will also release an entry, descent and landing demonstrator module (EDM) to measure parameters during its descent and landing. ExoMars 2016 is an ESA mission to which CNES and French research laboratories are contributing.
