    Thursday 18 May, ESA Director General Jan Wörner visited the Toulouse Space Centre, one of the four centres of excellence of CNES, the chief contributor to ESA. He was welcomed by CNES President and ESA Council co-Chair Jean-Yves Le Gall. This visit underlined the ESA Director General’s interest in the advances that CNES is achieving to curb climate change and in Mars exploration.

  5. French-German space cooperation CNES and DLR apply decisions reached in Brussels and Lucerne

    Thursday 26 January, the German space agency DLR presented its traditional New Year wishes in Berlin. On this occasion, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall met Pascale Ehrenfreund, Chair of DLR’s Executive Board, and members of the German space community. He took the opportunity to review progress on applying the new Space Strategy for Europe adopted in Brussels by the European Commission, and the advancement of programmes approved at the ESA Ministerial Conference in Lucerne.

    The first High-Level Forum on ‘Space as a driver for socio-economic sustainable development’, organized by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in the run-up to the UNISPACE+50 conference in June 2018, is being held in Dubai from Sunday 20 to Thursday 24 November. At the invitation of Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), on the opening day of the forum CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall talked about the role of satellites in curbing climate change.

    In the presence of Thierry Mandon, Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research, and Brigitte Zypries, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace and Information Technology Policy, CNES and its German counterpart DLR signed on Wednesday 14 September in Berlin a cooperation agreement to design, build and operate the French-German MERLIN satellite devoted to measuring concentrations of atmospheric methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
